As for me [Samuel], I will certainly not sin against the Lord by ending my prayers for you. And I will continue to teach you what is good and right. [1 Samuel 12.23]
If only we understood that prayer is not an option before God.
If Samuel's story means anything, it would seem not just any prayer satisfies God, but prayer for the people is specifically what God actually requires.
Samuel's people was Israel because that was his 'domain' if you will in the grand scheme of things (as a prophet).
Who are your people? Who are my people?
For starters, immediate family definitely falls under the category of our people. Then, there are ever broadening circles from there: closest friends, co-workers, neighbors, church folk, book club, scout group, city, state, etc... And, there are also those who lead that need prayer. We all have groups of people with whom we are involved. And, while we may not necessarily 'lead' those groups of people, we are part of them, and, as part, owe it to God to pray for them (notice I didn't say 'owe it to them?').
Father, help us to pray for others.
