“But when people die, their strength is gone. They breathe their last, and then where are they? [Job 14.10]
Clearly, Job had no comprehension of eternity. Job's estimation of life was that death was its conclusion.
While this is very interesting to understand about Job, I think even more interesting - even intriguing - is the fact that Job, even with no hope of life after death, was obviously committed to God with a passion.
So, the question we could ask ourselves today is, if there were no heaven or hell and certainly no afterlife, would we still serve God? If this life is all there is, would we still trust God with our daily affairs? Would we look to Him to lead and guide us? Would we desire to do His will and be His ambassadors?
I suppose its okay to ask if there is enough 'reality' of God around us to warrant our serving Him if, when we die, we cease to exist?
Perhaps Christianity today has gotten it all wrong. Have we focused too much on life after death robbing ourselves of a fulfilling relationship with God in this life?
Father, I have raised a question that I feel compelled needs an answer from me. Is there enough substance to our relationship for me to serve You even if this life is all there is?
