Jotham

“If you have acted honorably and in good faith toward Gideon and his descendants today, then may you find joy in Abimelech, and may he find joy in you. But if you have not acted in good faith, then may fire come out from Abimelech and devour the leading citizens of Shechem and Beth-millo; and may fire come out from the citizens of Shechem and Beth-millo and devour Abimelech!” [Jotham's words in Judges 9.19-20 from April 2 OYCB reading]

So the curse of Jotham son of Gideon was fulfilled. [Judges 10.57b]

The first scripture documented here above are the words of Jotham declaring an either/or scenario for Abilelech and Shechem.

The second passage above follows the documentation of Shechem's and then Abimelech's demise.

Question: what made Jotham's words carry such power that they would be fulfilled?  Was he a prophet?

We have no indication that Jotham was anything more than the youngest son of Gideon.  And, like his father, Jotham spent some time in hiding.  Regardless, Jotham is on record of having spoken a prophetic curse on the people of Shechem and Abimelech that came to pass.

Father, help me to guard the words of my mouth.  Help me to live by Your Spirit.  Help me to walk in the assurance that, like Jotham, my life and words are controlled by You!
