The Motion of Devotion

“I hate all your show and pretense— the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies. I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings. Away with your noisy hymns of praise! I will not listen to the music of your harps. Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living. [Amos 5.21-24]

I often wonder if I too am just going through the motion of devotion to God... calloused and empty. Is a "mighty flood of justice" - "an endless river of righteous living" evident in me?

This is a real question. The scariest thing about it is that I will pose this question and then walk away unrepentant, unconcerned, and unchanged. There will be no flood of justice (and what does that look like anyway?) - there will be no endless river of righteous living...

But I will be in church on Sunday!

Father, my condition is incurable. I am sick with calloused and empty motion of devotion to You. I need You to change me - to heal me of this terrible deception.
