Blood Is Thicker Than Water

When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home. [John 19.26,27]

As I read this today, I wondered about why Jesus made this connection between John and Mary instead of between Mary and one of her other children (she had several). Is there any significance to this event?

I've always heard that blood is thicker than water meaning that family always takes precedence... But it seems to me here today that Jesus did not at all support that idea - maybe?

Or maybe we could use this saying in a different light... Perhaps the blood of Jesus is much more uniting than the water of natural birth! Just a thought...

Father, that You for bringing me into Your family through the blood of Jesus!
