She Gave All

Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.” [Mark 12.41-44]

Ever wonder if the woman was poor BECAUSE she gave everything she had away? I mean, we know she was a widow, but, what if? What if, instead of allowing the Lord to build surplus in her life, she instantly gave it all away?

Remarkably enough, we don't actually know this answer. BUT Jesus' response was the same anyway. He recognized that she gave ALL. Whether her giving was foolish or desperate is irrelevant - she gave ALL.

One thing is absolutely for certain, the woman's giving was not convenient. And, for this, Jesus recognized and distinguished her from all the rest.

Father, I am compelled by the thought of this woman's faith today... And I realize just how far I am from that kind of faith...
