For whatever it meant to the disciples for the woman to pour perfume on Jesus, it must have had more significance to Jesus.
But what about everyone else? No doubt however, this fragrance of death was noticeable on Jesus all the way through His crucifixion. I imagine those who arrested Jesus, those who interrogated Him, those who beat Him, and those who actually nailed Him to the cross all did so in the aroma of this fragrance - the perfume of a man already dead. Surely all the perpetrators involved in Jesus' circumstance must have recognized the unmistakable fragrance of burial perfume.
Would this not have been a strange situation? Was the outcome of Jesus' interrogation and trial not determined before the proceedings ever took place? Was not the fragrance of burial perfume throughout this time an eerie indicator of events out of the control of those supposedly in control?
Father, this entire scenario just took on a whole new significance to me today. Help me to grasp this significance!
