Something To Think About

Pilate washed his hands of Jesus. But in so doing did he not actually participate in Jesus' death as much as anyone else? I suppose the public display that Pilate made of bringing out the bowl of water and washing his hands in front of the mob was likely a symbolic gesture. But the irony of it all is that passing the responsibility of Jesus' fate to the Jewish people did not mean Pilate had no part in Jesus' death - remember it was the Roman soldiers who actually crucified Jesus!

And what about Pilate's wife? Was she actually innocent in all this? After all, she did send a message to Pilate regarding Jesus and His innocence. A note perhaps??? Or did a servant deliver the message verbatim? If she was so convinced of Jesus' innocence, why did she not approach Pilate directly?

The fact is, an innocent man died and no one intervened on His behalf. Peter tried to in the Garden of Gethsemane but Jesus essentially told him not to. And, believe it or not, Judas' last recorded action before killing himself was that he too defended Jesus. And finally, Pilate's wife had a say.

It was eternally critical that Jesus go this alone however. Single handedly Jesus took on the punishment for the sin of the entire world... past, present, and future. No one could intervene in Jesus' death - God's plan would not allow it... something to think about...

Father, Your plans are certainly above our capacity to comprehend. But I do understand that Jesus "stood in for me." I accept that - I believe it. Thank You.
