Perpetual Brokenness

When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” [Mark 2.17]

Who's healthy?

The irony of Jesus' statement here is that no one is "healthy." Those who think they are healthy (spiritually right with God) are actually worse off than those who acknowledge they are sinners. Both are in dire need of forgiveness. Sadly though, only those who know they are sinners will find that forgiveness.

Bear with me a moment... Perhaps seeking to be "right with God" is a myth. The moment a person recognizes he or she is "right with God" - is that not precisely the moment Jesus warns about? Are they (the "healthy") not at that point actually as far as possible away from God?

Head trip!

Maybe being "right with God" is not the goal! Maybe being perpetually broken because of our sin is where we need to be! But wait! Paul later states there is "no condemnation" for believers... So, how do we live in perpetual brokenness without condemnation?

This is so good...

Perpetual brokenness is a position of humility and repentance. Perpetual brokenness recognizes, "this is the way I am, - I am not happy about it - but it is what it is - and in my perpetual brokenness I find Jesus - every day - every minute - every second - as my deliverer." The perpetually broken person constantly beholds Jesus.

So which would I rather be? "Right with God" and all alone? Or, perpetually broken with the comfort of Jesus right there all the time?

I will take Jesus.

Father, how amazing is Your grace and love and mercy... And how incredibly amazing is Your plan - Your Son - Jesus!
