Cruise Control

Jesus' interaction with the religious leaders in today's NT reading is worth much attention. There is something to be said for breaking tradition. There is a very positive aspect of getting away from ritualistic thinking. Jesus very clearly pointed out that the ritual and tradition of the religious leaders was man-made.

Mark 7.7: Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.

OK, so let's bash the traditionalists.

But wait! Isn't it possible that our "breaking from tradition" could become a religion all in its own right? Is it not possible that our proclamation of freedom from tradition develops into a religion (tradition) itself? Is it not at least possible that "leaving off" tradition becomes yet another man-made idea? And, if it is a man-made idea, then, according to Jesus, it is a farce.

God help us!

Father, let us NEVER dare to make our journey on cruise control!
