Vows

Make vows to the Lord your God, and keep them. Let everyone bring tribute to the Awesome One. [Psalm 76.11]

I suppose I have never realized that this Psalm actually instructs us to make vows to God.

What kind of vows?

I can only speak from my own experience, but for me, even though I never really 'made a vow' to God to read the One Year Chronological Bible, I have treated it like a vow, along with writing my daily responses to what I read in it each day. Again, for me, this has proven to strengthen and encourage me in faith.

So, I would conclude that the commitments we make and keep to God may indeed be a source of growth and strength in our spiritual walk. If this is the case, then, yes, we should make vows to God!

However, we cannot forget that our vows also bind us. There are blessings associated with keeping our vows and opposite results from breaking our vows (see yesterday's post).

Father, help me to be careful about what vows I make to You. But also, let it be that my devotion to You includes vows!
