Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.” [Isaiah 6.8]
It is interesting to me that Isaiah saw the LORD before he was cleansed and called by the LORD. He first described seeing the LORD sitting on His throne with the angels (seraphim) surrounding Him. It was at this point that Isaiah cried out confessing his own sinfulness. Apparently one of the angels responded to Isaiah's confession by approaching him with a burning coal and touching his lips with it (it is worth noting that Isaiah's actual confession was that he was a man of filthy lips).
It seems that the LORD's call to which Isaiah responded was more of a general call and not one specifically directed to Isaiah. Isaiah however stepped up and answered the call as one would volunteer for a duty.
What does this say to us today about a calling on our lives? For one thing, it could indicate that a calling may or may not be specific just to us - it could be a general call that we simply recognize and volunteer for! It may seem unimportant to answer such a "general call" but that is exactly what Isaiah did! How unimportant was Isaiah!
Father, I know I am learning about You and myself on this journey through the Bible. Help me to unlearn some of the erroneous ideas I have picked up throughout my lifetime and replace them with revelation truth from You (Your Word!). Help me furthermore to see that Your will will indeed be done whether I answer Your call or not.
