Everything has already been decided. It was known long ago what each person would be. So there’s no use arguing with God about your destiny. [Ecclesiastes 6.10]
So, was Solomon correct in this statement or not? One must recall that not every statement Solomon made in the Ecclesiastes was correct.
I personally think Solomon was struggling with his relationship with God. Well actually, it is well known that Solomon fell away from God in his latter years, but it seems evident in much of Ecclesiastes. In the statement above, it is my opinion that Solomon put on display the level of relationship he had with God at the point of his writing - which was 'removed' to say the least.
Many in the Bible who had dynamic relationships with God also persuaded God to change His mind on occasion - Moses is a great example. Solomon had evidently forgotten or was altogether unaware of this fact.
It is easy for people like Solomon, or even myself, to make statements about God that are limited to their own experience. The problem lies in that their own experience could very possibly be limited in its scope and therefore be limited in it representation of God. I think this is evident to me in my own writings here over the years.
I don't mind having an ever-developing view of God. But what I do not wish to experience is a waning relationship with God as occurred in Solomon's case.
Father, ever day I experience You, I realize just how little I knew of You the day before. Help me to grow in You every day. Help me to do whatever it takes to never let go of this growing relationship we have!
