What Should We Do?

Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” [Acts 2.37]

God's Word ALWAYS call us to action. If God's Word does not call us to action, then we are not seeing or hearing it. If we neither see nor hear the Word of God, we will never ask, “Brothers, what should we do?”

This blind and deaf condition is the result of idolatry.

Their idols are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands. They have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see. They have ears but cannot hear, and noses but cannot smell. They have hands but cannot feel, and feet but cannot walk, and throats but cannot make a sound. And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them. [Psalm 115.4-8]

The idols of the nations are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands. They have  mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see. They have ears but cannot hear, and mouths but cannot breathe. And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them. [Psalm 135.15-18]

Jesus' disciple John recognized this condition tracing it back to Isaiah's writings:

But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in him. This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted: “Lord, who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?” But the people couldn’t believe, for as Isaiah also said, “The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts— so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.” [John 12.37-40]

To look upon and listen to Jesus, God's Living Word, is the only way to actually see and hear God.

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. [John 14.6]

Regardless of all the religious stuff we do, if we actually look to and listen to Jesus allowing Him to pierce our hearts, asking, “Brothers, what should we do?” The answer is and will always be:

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. [Matthew 16.24 (also, Mark 8.34 & Luke 9.23)]

So, it is much easier for us to do our own thing and simply keep our question, Brothers, what should we do?” to ourselves, ...unless, of course, we want to see and hear and understand - and be healed.

Father, may our eyes and ears be opened and fixed upon Jesus so that we might understand His call to undivided, unwavering faith. So be it.
