A Prediction Applicable For Today

“Then Israel will no longer be tempted to trust in Egypt for help. Egypt’s shattered condition will remind Israel of how sinful she was to trust Egypt in earlier days. Then Israel will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.” [Ezekiel 29.16]

On this day in 2021, What Does This Mean? was written. As I re-read that article today, I can only conclude that what it said stands true today. Ezekiel's prediction for Egypt is just as applicable to the idols God's people commit spiritual adultery with today.

The idols God's people trust in will utterly and completely fail. If the world really understood this, they would do everything in their power to prevent God's people from using their idols! But, since the world does not submit to God or His Word, like Egypt, they will suffer the consequences of misleading God's people in ignorance.

When the idols of the world crash (and they will), God's people will no longer be tempted to trust them. Not only will God's people not be tempted, but they will understand how sinful they were to trust in them in the first place.

The more God's people trust in the world's idols, the more painful those idols' demise will be to God's people:

When Israel leaned on you, you splintered and broke and stabbed her in the armpit. When she put her weight on you, you collapsed, and her legs gave way. [Ezekiel 29.7]

In the end, God's name will remain holy. Should we expect any less?

Father, may our eyes be opened to the truth of Your Word concerning idolatry. May we see that the things we so adulterously depend on today (instead of You) will ultimately and entirely fail. May our faith be found in You increasingly more every day so that when the world's idols fail (and they will fail), Your faithful ones will not fail with them. So be it.
