What Are You Waiting For?

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. [Acts 2.1]

The famous 2nd Chapter of Acts has caused questions from the time it occurred to this very day. Many people have been divided over its meaning. From clueless children to aged theologians, all find something incredible about the events described in Acts 2 and most simply believe what they believe about it simply ignoring other possibilities.

Is Acts 2 a pattern for us today?

While we ponder this question, we must first understand that the believers who experienced this wonderful event had one crucial thing in common: they had come together in Jerusalem waiting in anticipation because Jesus said to do so.

What are people waiting for today? Are we waiting for something other-worldly, or just for our next paycheck? Are we waiting for something completely out of our control, or until we have the opportunity to 'call the shots'? Are we waiting for when "we get ours," or for when we have the opportunity to give all for others? Are we waiting for fulfilment in ourselves, or to be the fulfilment in another?

I wonder how foundational the fact is that the believers were "together" without any preconception of what was about to happen? They were together, and they were waiting. While they waited, they simply discussed what got them where they were...

You know what? People just don't have time to get together to wait today, do they?

How could we possibly know what we are missing in all our busyness?

Father, may we find the value in waiting with each other... and, while we wait, as Peter and the 120 people did, may we openly discuss what brought us together in the first place.
