Wherever And Whatever - In Christ

After the death of Moses the LORD’s servant, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant. He said, “Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them. I promise you what I promised Moses: ‘Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you— from the Negev wilderness in the south to the Lebanon mountains in the north, from the Euphrates River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, including all the land of the Hittites.’ No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you. [Joshua 1.1-5]

What should we learn from Gods promise to Joshua found in the passage above?

It would seem that, when we are walking in the blessing of God doing what He has led us to do that there is some discretion left to us. "Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you" is rather open-ended.

At this time, Israel was preparing to cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land. As the Promised Land represents Jesus, so we can relate to Israel as God's people. What this says is that "in Christ" we have much discretion "where to set our feet" and yet great confidence that where we set our feet is fulfillment of our being "in Christ."

I remembered a verse from Deuteronomy:

Wherever you go and whatever you do, you will be blessed. [Deuteronomy 28.6]

This statement from Deuteronomy indicated what might be expected reciprocal to Israel's obedience. Entering the Promised Land was God's will for Israel all along. Upon obediently entering that Promised Land, Israel was covered by God's promise of "wherever..." and "whatever..." As we interpret the Promised Land to be Christ, we then can understand that in obedience to Christ, we are given the confidence that wherever we go and whatever we do will be blessed. To confirm this, God sent Jesus, Who, wherever He went and whatever He did, brought blessing, instruction and miracles. Think about that!

Father, may I remain mindful that, in Christ, wherever I go and whatever I do is blessed for Your Kingdom! May I be found confident in Your blessing to do what Jesus did.
