Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their incense burners and sprinkled incense over them. In this way, they disobeyed the LORD by burning before him the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded. So fire blazed forth from the LORD’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the LORD. [Leviticus 10.1-2]
I am not really sure I understand what it was about what Nadab and Abihu did that was wrong. But, does that make a difference?
Hmm.
Just because I don't know what these two sons of Aaron did wrong does not mean they didn't know what they did was wrong. In context, no one protested about it which, assuredly indicates they knew exactly what the violation was.
This story serves as a perfect example of how our modern culture understands so little of ancient ways - and particularly so when it regards God's holiness.
Is there any way that we can ever attain to the level of holiness-consciousness of God's people of history? If there is, it will be through knowledge of God's Word - and even then, it will take the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to help us to process what that knowledge means!
Father, help me to get as much knowledge as I possibly can of Your Word. And, may I also be found attentive to the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit as to what that knowledge means... Knowing what happened to Nadab and Abihu is one thing, but understanding why it happened is another altogether.
