Struggling Musicians pt 2

I also discovered that the Levites had not been given their prescribed portions of food, so they and the singers who were to conduct the worship services had all returned to work their fields. [Nehemiah 13.10]

This verse generally sums up the condition of musicians as it pertains to the Church today (see yesterday's post Struggling Musicians).

One of the most common phrases familiar to a true musician is the phrase "day job." Musicians know all too well that their day job is their reality because their music doesn't pay the bills.

How might this scenario be drastically changed if the Church today treated musicians with the same priority as Nehemiah prescribed? Now, before saying, "Well... that was Old Testament," let me offer the reminder that we don't treat other church leaders like that today (ie. pastors, teachers, assistants, administrators, etc). We still preserve many full-time positions for them.

What's more, relative to the previous paragraph, in the context of today's OYCB reading, more is said about musicians and music than any other Temple service! Does that not attest to a priority perhaps the modern church has not grasped?

All I can say more here is, should not musicians be given more budgetary consideration in today's modern church?

Father, help us today to move closer to what corporate worship should look like...
