For you have proudly defied the Lord of heaven and have had these cups from his Temple brought before you. You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone—gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny! [Daniel 5.23]
Daniel is addressing Belshazzar (ruler of Babylon after Nebuchadnezzar).
To get right to the point, the problem was not so much that Belshazzar and his entourage were drinking from cups of the Temple of God, but more that they were doing so while praising the gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.
God is not about to share His glory with anyone or anything. For us to be avid church-goers while putting out trust in the gods of this world is a foul stench in God's nostrils.
The very night after Belshazzar received this message, he died.
Father, may we be aware of our idolatry and turn from it entirely that we might trust and glorify only You!
