What will you say when the LORD takes the allies you have cultivated and appoints them as your rulers? Pangs of anguish will grip you, like those of a woman in labor! [Jeremiah 13.21]
What is Jeremiah speaking about here? Who are the allies that will be taken away? What do they represent?
The allies represent Israel's idols and idolatry. Remember, an idol is anything or anyone in which a person trusts to do that which God said He would do.
Do we trust insurance instead of God?
Do we trust medicine instead of God?
Do we trust science instead of God?
Do we trust money instead of God?
Or, how about this: Do we trust that God uses these things? If so, do we trust that God HAS TO USE these things (is God's power limited to the use of these things)? If we don't have these things, can God still move?
Is it REALLY faith to say "I know God heals, but He uses medicine?"
Look at what Jeremiah said about the allies (idols) of Israel. He said Israel would be ruled by them!
How many people today feel ruled by insurance, medicine, science, and money? How many people slave at jobs they absolutely detest just to pay the bills (oftentimes, interest, insurance, and medicine)? How many people do so just to pay for the house, vehicle or lifestyle they really can't afford?
Yes, these things rule even God's people today!
See the problem?
Father, help us see the problem and help us to do what is actually necessary to correct it. Help us to eliminate idols from our lives regardless whether it makes us unpopular or even kills us!
