My father taught me, “Take my words to heart. Follow my commands, and you will live. Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don’t forget my words or turn away from them. Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you. Love her, and she will guard you. Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. If you prize wisdom, she will make you great. Embrace her, and she will honor you. She will place a lovely wreath on your head; she will present you with a beautiful crown.” [Proverbs 4.4-9]
Solomon is highly praised for his wisdom.
When Solomon requested wisdom in response to God's offer of anything he asked for (2 Chronicles 1.1-12), it was NOT Solomon's first encounter with the idea of wisdom! We see here today that Solomon's father David instilled this quest for wisdom in him!
David's example set the bar what fatherhood should look like.
What might Solomon's outcome have looked like had David not made such a priority of wisdom?
Fathers, there is much we can do to help our sons and daughters succeed in life, but nothing is more important than teaching them to seek wisdom from God.
Father, even at this point in my life, may I be found promoting wisdom to my grown children and their children!
