“But you are not the only ones with whom I am making this covenant with its curses. I am making this covenant both with you who stand here today in the presence of the LORD our God, and also with the future generations who are not standing here today. [Deuteronomy 29.14-15]
"Well, that's just Old Testament..."
Is it? I think not! Why? Because Paul addresses the curses and blessings to the church at Galatia:
But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith. [Galatians 3.13-14]
God's covenant of blessings and curses is valid even today. But, even better, it's validity includes Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of obedience for those who believe. Faith is our obedience. Jesus is our obedience. Blessings and curses upon our lives are not determined by our compliance to the Law but instead reflect our faith in Christ as our Redeemer.
So, with the hymnist of old we might rejoice and sing. "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness..."
Father, I am grateful today for this reminder that Jesus is my hope and salvation. He is my Redeemer! Thank You!
