So give me the hill country that the LORD promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the LORD is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said.” [Joshua 14.12]
Caleb's faith is worthy of attention.
First, Caleb referred to a promise. Caleb had been promised he would receive the subject property of this passage. Caleb was vocal in reminding Joshua and everyone else about this promise even though it was yet unfulfilled.
Next, Caleb acknowledged the presence of giants and great walled towns. To most, this would be a strong influence to go elsewhere! However, Caleb was mindful of the promise and refused to see the giants and their great walled towns as a deterrent.
Finally, Caleb was fully willing to walk out his faith regardless of the outcome. He said, "if the LORD is with me..."
I think this is a problem with modern Christianity... Unlike Caleb, we are only willing to walk by faith if it goes well for us. Consequently, the Church, by and large, lives in mediocrity hiding behind statements like, "I don't have that kind of faith..." instead of blindly believing in the God Who has made us countless promises.
Caleb's statement of faith, basically indicated that he trusted God to deliver the giants and their great walled towns to him, but, if not... Evidently, Caleb was not intimidated by the "if not..." "If not," in this case, would most likely have been the death of Caleb.
Herein lies the crux of the matter: is anything worse than being dead? It all depends on what one believes! To be dead without God's redemption is the worst. However, in contrast, to be dead in God's redemption - well, there is nothing better.
So what then if we attempt great faith objectives and fail? I would much rather fail in faith than fail without faith for sure! See the difference?
My life serves a purpose. However, that purpose is not mine to safeguard - but rather, it is the LORD's. My only objective then is to fulfill my purpose by faith.
We live in a society where "living" is the most important thing. But what good is living if the life we live is not a life of faith?
Without faith it is impossible to please God.
In simple words: faith does not fear failure. Faith does not fear death.
Father, may my life and my words be consistent with each other. Be glorified in me as I trust in You!
