“Do you think it is right for you to claim, ‘I am righteous before God’? For you also ask, ‘What’s in it for me? What’s the use of living a righteous life?’ [Job 35.2-3]
Elihu "busts" Job on a very important issue - one that stood out to me yesterday (What Is Your Motive?).
If our relationship to God has anything to do with this question, 'What's in it for me?' then we are in for a Job-sized surprise.
The core driver for the question, 'What's in it for me?' is selfishness.
The core driver for selfishness is pride.
Suffice it to say, a quick search for the word "pride" in the Bible yields the overwhelming implication that God detests and resists pride in the heart of man.
'What's in it for me?' reveals Godlessness at it worst.
As Elihu accurately pointed out, for Job to ask, 'What's in it for me?' and proclaim, 'I am righteous before God' was simply ludicrous.
Father, may I be quick to reject any and every notion of 'What's in it for me?' as I live my life in service to You.
