A Great Wave...

Saul was one of the witnesses, and he agreed completely with the killing of Stephen. A great wave of persecution began that day, sweeping over the church in Jerusalem; and all the believers except the apostles were scattered through the regions of Judea and Samaria. [Acts 8.1]

How much did Stephen's death affect Saul of Tarsus?

Apparently, a great deal.

It would seem, since Saul was authorized to arrest Christians (followers of the Way), upon witnessing Stephen's death, that he became further emboldened to ramp up his efforts there in Jerusalem. So drastic was this persecution that it is defined as "a great wave of persecution." And, just like a great wave crashing ashore scatters everything on the shore, so the believers in Jerusalem were scattered.

No doubt, seeing Stephen die triggered a bloodlust in Saul and others opposed to the Way (Christ). If Saul had any reservations about persecuting followers of Christ before that day, certainly those reservations dissipated on that day.

It was in Saul's heightened state of fury that Jesus confronted him on the road to Damascus.

I am trying to understand how this might relate to the current state of Christianity in the world today. At least in the USA, there is a movement against Christianity, but it hasn't really gained "great wave" status at this point. What will be the turning point that the persecution of Christians will be ramped up similarly to that day in Jerusalem when Stephen was stoned?

I don't know the answer to the question above, but I think we can be sure bloodshed, as it was in Stephen's case, that will trigger widespread persecution.

Again, in the USA, we have witnessed recent mob activity. I suspect it will be something very similar to this mob mentality that will direct its destruction and chaos upon Christians. It's only a matter of time.

However, this predicted increase in mob activity will ultimately reveal "apostle Pauls." No, it won't stop the persecution, but a new caliber of Christian will emerge, like Saul of Tarsus became the Apostle Paul!

These are exciting times. While the world continues to see chaos and confusion, Jesus' followers will see the power of God. Of course, the manifestation of God's power will only further infuriate those who do not believe... Jesus is coming soon.

Father, may a new caliber of Christian arise in the days ahead! May I be found as one of those new caliber Christians! May my life experience new levels of commitment and devotion and power!
