What If?

I also discovered that the Levites had not been given their prescribed portions of food, so they and the singers who were to conduct the worship services had all returned to work their fields. [Nehemiah 13.10]

After a time away from Jerusalem, Nehemiah returned and found the people had digressed in their devotion to God as seen in their daily routines and worship. On indicator of this was that the Levites and singers were no longer being supported and had necessarily returned to "secular" work.

From the patterns of the Tabernacle and then the Temple, it is seen that what took place there took place daily. While it seems normal to the modern Christian community to meet once or twice a week, the pattern of the Temple indicates a different mindset.

Somehow, in the "Jesus paid it all" period of "grace" in which we now live, believers in Christ have allowed themselves to disregard daily devotion along with daily sacrifices. Certainly Jesus offered Himself once for all as the ultimate sacrifice for all our sin, but did He offer Himself as a once for all devotion to God in prayer, worship, and service? I think not. And yet, our churches are predominantly vacant and silent throughout the week.

What would it look like if the Church today held ongoing daily worship and various services? Oh, of course, it seems impossible. But what if? What if, at any time, a person could 'come by the church' and worship or pray with a contingency of assigned singers and leaders there, on duty, for just that purpose?

I know this sounds a little far-fetched. But seriously, what if?

Father, help us to understand what our corporate devotion to You should really look like versus what it looks like today.
