Before the way of faith in Christ was available to us, we were placed under guard by the law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed. [Galatians 3.23]
The thing is, faith preexisted the Law. However, Jesus (the Word) is the 'activator' (so to speak) of saving faith. So, salvation by faith, although designed and planned long before the Law, was necessarily 'on hold' until the Law could achieve its intermediary purpose.
I don't believe an 'exhaustive' understanding of all things pertaining to the Law is necessary to salvation, but one must consider that it was indeed God's plan to order things as He did. So, we must conclude, if the Law was even just an intermediary plan on the way to saving faith, it carries then no small significance.
To understand all there is to understand about the Law and saving faith will, no doubt, be a progressive education on earth that is only fully completed when we come into God's presence for eternity. However, this truth should never relieve us of an intense quest to seek God's Kingdom first while here on earth.
Father, I want to understand more about the Law and about saving faith. May my eyes and ears be open, and my heart be found understanding of all that You have revealed through Your Word.
