For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again. [1 Corinthians 11.23-26]
Here's a thought. How important is the observance of the Lord's Supper if Jesus made the special effort post-resurrection to give Paul detailed instructions about it?
We know from Paul's Damascus Road experience some of what was discussed there at that time. Jesus appeared to Paul and asked why he was persecuting Him. And, it would seem that was an appropriate discussion given Paul's widely-known zeal for persecuting Jesus' Church.
As best I know, there is no indication in the Bible when Jesus told Paul about Communion (as we know it), but, according to Paul's letter to the Church at Corinth, that conversation did indeed happen.
So, back to the question: How important is the observance of the Lord's Supper if Jesus made the special effort post-resurrection to give Paul detailed instructions about it?
I believe this is the first time in my life that this question came into my mind. And now, it seems prudent that we should each ask ourselves this question with the express intent of understanding its answer!
Just how important is Communion?
Let's just give a logical answer: It is important enough that Jesus would give Paul special instruction about it well after the Resurrection! I would say that's pretty important!
Father, help me to take Communion into greater consideration in my life and my home. I want to know and experience all that Communion means and affords its observers.
