The musicians, all prominent Levites, lived at the Temple. They were exempt from other responsibilities since they were on duty at all hours. [1 Chronicles 9.33]
Is this not every musicians' dream?
The duty of the musicians was to play music at all times.
Two things might be learned from this. First, music is important in the worship of God. While there are those who argue that they can worship God just fine without music, they are not very well synchronized with what the Bible teaches about worship.
Next, for there to be music, it is necessary to have musicians. Someone has to make the music. The better the music, the more time and energy put into its production.
I have heard it said before, and I personally believe it is true: the music industry is so big because there are so many people with "music in them" that the church is not employing as it should, and therefore, those people are fulfilling their 'talents' elsewhere.
If the church today is going to pattern its structure and worship anything like God originally laid out for "worship" (I am not talking about sacrifices and all that Jesus redeemed us from, but purely the worship of God in music - Jesus did NOT redeem us from worship of God), then the church should employ many more musicians than it does (if it employs any at all)!
How might 24/7 worship of God look among God's people today? I mean, we cannot throw out this facet of corporate ministry because it is 'Old Testament' without throwing out all forms of modern corporate ministry.
I suppose big budgets and big ministry are fine, but there is a gross shortage of funding in the area of music. Yes, I said it. Musicians needs as much or more time to develop their craft as do teachers and preachers. Why are they the last budgetary consideration?
Father, like so much of society, has the church strayed so far from Your patterns of worship that it is unlikely it will ever get it right? Help us to see that relationship with You is on YOUR TERMS and the Bible provides some excellent insight on just what YOUR TERMS look like.
