“You say, ‘That’s not true! I haven’t worshiped the images of Baal!’ But how can you say that? Go and look in any valley in the land! Face the awful sins you have done. You are like a restless female camel desperately searching for a mate. You are like a wild donkey, sniffing the wind at mating time. Who can restrain her lust? Those who desire her don’t need to search, for she goes running to them! When will you stop running? When will you stop panting after other gods? But you say, ‘Save your breath. I’m in love with these foreign gods, and I can’t stop loving them now!’ [Jeremiah 2.23-25]
This is terrible. But I am afraid it clearly describes us today with our science and technology.
Instead of crying out to God, we are relentlessly pursuing our science and technology to meet our needs. We can say it is not true, but we all know it is.
Jeremiah says it is "panting after other gods," and that is painfully accurate.
Look at what the people's response is: ‘Save your breath. I’m in love with these foreign gods, and I can’t stop loving them now!’ And this is exactly what we say when we declare that "we can't turn our backs on the science!" Or, "We can't just do away with technology!"
We can try to declare it isn't so, but the Word of God increasingly convinces me otherwise. We are just "like a wild donkey, sniffing the wind at mating time..." Yes, the analogy is gross - but that is exactly how God sees it when we chase after other sources for those things God specifically said He is our source for: righteousness, sanctification, peace, present help, healing, provision, leadership, identity (our banner), forgiveness, advocacy, refuge, strength, defense, protection, safety, and shielding.
Father, forgive me not only for chasing after other sources for that which You said You would provide, but also forgive me for defending my pursuit of these things based on reason or logic... or just pure self-orientation.
