Don't Worship The Design, But The Designer

I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! [Psalm 121.1-2]

Many look at the majesty of mighty mountains and are tempted to worship them. Why? Probably the single greatest reason is that mountains, more than anything else, can be seen as an abundant source of water. The one thing that man simply cannot survive without is water, so, it would be easy to worship the mountains, wouldn't it?

Here's the deal though, mountains simply serve as a component of a greater water recycling system. The mountains provide the elevation and temperature requirements for snow to be deposited and melted in a world-sized filter process if you will. In fact, the mountains are only a component of this filter. The sun (for evaporation) and clouds (for transportation) provide other (but not all the) critical components of this magnificent filter operation.

In fact, the sustenance of man and animal alike is ultimately dependent upon water. If there is no water, plants do not grow, animals do not eat, and pretty much everything dies. All life on earth needs water, but humans particularly need water that is not contaminated.

So, the designer of the water recycling system is whom upon we really depend. It is shortsighted to praise the design and not the designer.

This discussion is important relative to several of my posts in recent days regarding idols in our lives. God makes no allowance for us to give glory to anything or anyone else besides Him. Tempted as we may be to worship the design, logic would remind us every design has a designer and that that designer is far greater than the design.

Father, help me to "center" all my thoughts about creation's design on You. The design is indeed magnificent, but nothing when compared with You, the Designer!
