In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa developed a serious foot disease. Yet even with the severity of his disease, he did not seek the LORD’s help but turned only to his physicians. So he died in the forty-first year of his reign. [2 Chronicles 16.12-13]
What does it mean to seek the LORD's help? From the context of this passage, it clearly does not mean going to the doctor. In fact, seeking the LORD's help is contrasted to turning to physicians for help.
Even more clear is the assertion by the passage above that seeking the LORD's help is something altogether beyond only turning to physicians. It is an entirely different realm.
Asa sought only the help of man when he could have sought the help of God. Asa died for his decision.
Two conclusions that may be drawn from this passage are: man cannot heal, but God can.
If God was displeased with Asa for his failure to seek God's help, how displeased is He with us for our failure to seek His help (and instead rely on physicians)?
Fear is evident in dependence upon man. Faith is evident in dependence upon God.
Father, forgive me for depending on man and not You. I know I talk a good faith walk but stumble when it comes to walking it.
