And she said, “Father, if you have made a vow to the LORD, you must do to me what you have vowed, for the LORD has given you a great victory over your enemies, the Ammonites. [Judges 11.36]
How significant is it that the child recognized the value of a vow? Regardless how foolish the vow by her father was, she understood the importance of the vow and the absolute necessity of keeping it.
This incident, along with the situation that developed afterwards between Jephthah and the people of Ephraim make crystal clear that people today understand very little about the culture of the people in these Biblical accounts.
The situation with the vow and the offense perceived between Jephthah and Ephraim seem they could have been easily remedied by modern standards. However, our lax attitude about these events just goes to prove that we don't get it. We do not understand the significance of a vow and we do not understand the significant of our alliances.
I wonder what else we don't understand?
Father, I want to see the Bible in light of Your understanding ...understanding that I am incapable of such understanding unless You give it.
