After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the LORD or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel. [Judges 2.10]
It was after the generation of Joshua that this verse refers to.
What happened? In a short synopsis, Israel failed to drive out all the inhabitants of Canaan (the Promised Land).
Because Israel was content with co-occupying Canaan with its former inhabitants, and, because Israel's "content" progressed into "embrace," they sinned further against the LORD by adopting Canaan's gods and ways. Israel broke covenant with God and made covenants with Canaan - even entering into marriage covenants with them. Having done so, they essentially forgot God.
The question for us is: what have we embraced at the expense of forgetting God and His ways?
Father, the implications of the question above are overwhelming. Forgive us for embracing the ways of the world and its gods of godlessness. Help us to return to holiness with purity of heart and mind toward You.
