'Hooray God' - Oh Wait, There Are Rules?

When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear. And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!” [Exodus 20.18-19]

These were the same people who witnessed God lead them by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night. These are the same people who witnessed God open the Red Sea for them to cross but closed it back up swallowing Pharaoh and his army. These are the same people who witnessed manna in the morning and quail in the evening from God's provision. These are the same people who witnessed water come from a rock so they could drink...

Why do you think they were afraid at this particular time?

Here's an interesting bit of information: as timing goes, the verses above immediately follow God giving the Ten Commandments. In other words, Israel was all 'hooray God' as long as they got what they wanted from Him. But let some rules get laid down, and suddenly they are afraid? Yeah, right.

The application of this today is real. Sure, we all want the good stuff from God. But, when rules start becoming attached, we become resistant.

I wish it wasn't true, but it is.

Father, as I look into Your Word, help me to be obediently conform to Your will - even Your rules. You are God and there is no other.
