Ironic Story

So all the men in the town council agreed with Hamor and Shechem, and every male in the town was circumcised. But three days later, when their wounds were still sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, who were Dinah’s full brothers, took their swords and entered the town without opposition. Then they slaughtered every male there, including Hamor and his son Shechem. They killed them with their swords, then took Dinah from Shechem’s house and returned to their camp. [Genesis 34.24-26]

Oh the irony of it all!

The men of Shechem all died because of circumcision. In their pain and weakness after having been circumcised, they were unable to defend themselves against Simeon and Levi as they avenged the rape of their sister Dinah by Hamor's son, Shechem (apparently for whom the town was named).

The ironic thing is that it was the sex organ that got one of them into the situation they were in and circumcision of the sex organ that got all of them killed.

The moral of the story might be summed up as this: control your sex or it might kill you.

Father, sometimes it just seems all too obvious what You are saying. And yet, we plunge right off into sin anyway...
