DO That!

And furthermore, it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about. For in one place the Scriptures say, “What are mere mortals that you should think about them, or a son of man that you should care for him? Yet for a little while you made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them authority over all things.” Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority. [Hebrews 2.5-8]

Authority over all things? Where have we heard that before?

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” [Matthew 28.18-20]

It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ [Luke 24.27]

So, it is no wonder the writer of Hebrews records, "You gave them authority over all things..." referring to both mortals (us) and a son of man (what Jesus referred to Himself as).

Followers of Christ must reconcile with these three (and other) scriptures indicating their position in heaven and therefore on earth. It sheds different light on Jesus' instruction how to pray and it reveals the authority doing so carries:

May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. [Matthew 6.10]

You see, every miracle Jesus worked was the imposition God's will on earth according to the standard of heaven. Jesus was very clear that we should pray to that same end in Matthew 6.10.

Jesus' instruction did not stop at prayer however. He went even further to indicate that our works (the things we do) would reflect that same Kingdom imposition upon the earth:

“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. [John 14.12]

Christ followers cannot get around these mandates. We are responsible to carry out God's will on earth as it is in heaven not only like Jesus demonstrated, but at an even greater level. Imagine that! But, better still, DO that!

Father, help us as believers in Christ to be found in obedience to Christ.
