Contentment Is Dangerous

“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. [Revelation 3.15-17]

Contentment is dangerous.

Notice how here in Revelation 3, in Jesus' words to the Church of Laodicea, that the Church was neither hot nor cold... Jesus went on to say that the Church had everything they needed in context of this lukewarm condition.

We can accurately conclude then, that contentment in having all they needed put them into a state of lukewarm-ness for which they would ultimately be rejected by God.

Suddenly, for the astute Christian, having all we need is no longer important as a goal! In fact, such contentment with having all one needs lends itself to that person not needing God as well.

So, the goal in life is NOT to have all we need, but to faithfully serve the One Who meets all needs.

What's more, there reason to serve the One Who meets all needs is not so we will have what we need, but so His will on earth (that all be saved and understand the truth) is accomplished.

"Hot" or "cold" is insignificant to the conversation as it is presented by Jesus. "Lukewarm" however is, at all cost, to be avoided.

Furthermore, contentment is not to be found in the extremes of wealth or poverty as if either is a goal. The goal is to bear the Good News to all - discontent until all are saved and understand the truth.

Father, help me to stop all obsession with having all I need. May my efforts be focused on doing Your will.
