I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things take place. [Matthew 24.34]
What generation?
There is my explanation for what this means:
"This generation" seems to mean the generation that begins to see the events Jesus described in this context. It will be that generation (the generation that first sees these things start to occur) that will see all these things occur.
Consider this:
“Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the peoples of the earth. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with the mighty blast of a trumpet, and they will gather his chosen ones from all over the world—from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven. [Matthew 24.29-31]
In other words, the generation that sees the sun darkened, will be the same generation that sees the moon give no light. The same generation that sees the moon give no light will be the same generation that will witness the stars fall from the sky... and so on.
Jesus made it clear, using the fig tree's sure sign of summer, that we would be able to determine from "these things" that the end is near.
What we have seen until now has been compelling, but not exactly what Jesus described. Rest assured, that whatever generation starts seeing these things, will be the generation that sees all these things!
Father, help us to know the signs of Jesus' return!
