“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. [Matthew 7.7-8]
This passage of scripture is often quoted. It provides a lot of encouragement in persistence and faith.
However, does it not make us at least wonder how it could follow what is just spoken a few sentences before?
“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. [Matthew 6.31-32]
Could it be that what Matthew 7.7-8 is speaking of is NOT food or clothing (personal daily sustenance stuff)? Besides, Jesus said that people who concentrate on (keep on asking?) these things are, in fact, unbelievers!
If we think with our Kingdom minds for just a moment, perhaps we would conclude that Matthew 7.7-8 is not about our daily sustenance, but a promise that our persistence in praying for others' needs will be heard.
Just a thought.
Father, I want to pray right and effectively. Help me to see just what Your Word and Your Son teach on the matter!
