Follow Your Heart (unless you want to please God)

It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.” [Mark 7.15]

Just follow your heart, right? Wrong.

If we follow our hearts, according to Jesus, here is what we are in for:

For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.” [Mark 7.21-23]

Just follow your heart? Not so much. ...That is, if you want to be pleasing to God.

When we realize that is in our hearts that dwell all the bad things that bring curses on man, then we can begin to understand the truth Jesus spoke of so often.

Jeremiah said it well long before Jesus pointed it out:

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? [Jeremiah 17.9]

If we are not supposed to follow our heart, then what is our compass? The Word of God.

The problem found in most 'believers' today is that they want to follow God, but they still believe their heart is capable of guiding them. Well, that may be all well and good as long as Jesus alone is on the throne of your heart. Otherwise, see Mark 7.21-23 (above).

The scary thing is, what do we trust to know Jesus sits on the throne of our heart? Our heart? Yeah, that's a recipe for disaster. No, we trust the Bible. We know Jesus sits on the throne of our heart when we look and act like He said look and act - when we do the works He did and greater works - when we are called Christians because we look and act like Christ, not because we 'say' we are Christians.

I know this is harsh. But, isn't it time we get serious?

Father, I want You to have full control of my heart. The problem is, it is still in me... Let my life and time on earth be spent in full submission to You. Forgive me for ever trusting my heart. Come and have full control over it.
