And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled. For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the king, “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship him, but his fierce anger rages against those who abandon him.” So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer. [Ezra 8.21-23]
If only God's people had this attitude about God today!
But instead, we say God is our Healer and yet we turn to doctors and medicine.
We say God is our Provider and yet we are consumed with jobs and careers with no time for anything else.
We say God is our Refuge and yet we depend on our government to provide security.
We say God is our Fortress and Shield and yet we are insured to the hilt.
In fact, Christians today have said many things about God and His Provision for His own and then turned right around and have done the opposite. We have said one thing, but lived our an entirely different thing.
We have said we trust God, but if that is true, it sure looks like our God then is medicine, science, technology, insurance, politics, and the likes.
Is it not time that God's people are distinguished from the world? I think so.
We have become the people Paul spoke of:
They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! [2 Timothy 3.5]
Is that what we are doing? Maybe not on purpose, but Paul's' description sure seems to describe the Church today.
Father, forgive me for saying one thing and doing another. I know it is called hypocrisy. Forgive me for being a flagrant hypocrite.
