The more words you speak, the less they mean. So what good are they? [Ecclesiastes 6.11]
So far, in Ecclesiastes, I don't really see that Solomon is repentant. Mind you, Solomon is writing this on the heels of turning away from God because of having embraced the foreign gods of his foreign wives.
The verse above is not the first time Solomon mentioned the abundance of speech being a problem.
Certainly Job experienced this first hand.
Then Job replied to the LORD, “I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.” [Job 40.3-5]
Perhaps Solomon was experiencing what Job recognized as a real problem - one for which Job repented.
Interestingly enough, Jesus gave some thought about what we speak:
A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. [Luke 6.45]
So then, what comes out of our mouths tells the story of what is going on in our hearts.
Is there a torrent of words coming from my mouth? If so, then there is a torrent of information in my heart.
Is all that information good and right?
One thing is for sure, the more information we put in our hearts, the greater the likelihood there will be some bad stuff in there. Unless, of course, the diet of what we put in our hearts has been tested and tried as Truth (like God's Holy Word).
Think of it this way, simple is good. It is intriguing then that Jesus made the following statement:
Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. [Matthew 18.3]
Little children are simple. They are not full of "knowledge." But know this: if it in a child's heart, it WILL come out of his little mouth! Many of us have experienced great embarrassment at the words of an innocent child.
The best way to safeguard when comes out of our mouths is to limit what goes into our eyes and ears. This is precisely why we cannot go wrong with God's Word.
As much as I try to be accurate with what I say in these blog posts, I know there is great error from time to time. Is it worth quoting me then? Absolutely not! Quote the Bible - not someone's opinion about the Bible (they might just be wrong!).
Bottom line: the more words we speak leaves us vulnerable to error. However, if like Jesus, we are saturated with God's Word, then the words we speak will bring salvation, help (healing and provision), conviction, and peace.
That said, if we are speaking God's Word, as did Jesus, we will see God's Works, AS DID JESUS.
The problem is, too many people are too full of meaningless words that are not God's Word.
Father, I need to read and re-read this post every day. Thank You for these thoughts today. Help me to be a man of Your Word. Help me to keep my mouth shut more and my eyes and ears open to You.
