What's The Worst That Can Happen?

“Let’s go across to the outpost of those pagans,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer. “Perhaps the LORD will help us, for nothing can hinder the LORD. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!” [1 Samuel 14.6]

What's the worst that can happen?

Well, for starters, you could die.

I like the wording in the NLT: "Perhaps the LORD will help us..."

Are we willing to go on a perhaps? Jonathan was, and he did.

As long as we place our life above all, we will never succeed in events greater than our life.

If Jonathan had prized his life above fighting some twenty men with only two men (a suicide mission at best), there would have been no record of his great victory.

But Jonathan's victory was NOT his, was it? No, Jonathan from the beginning realized that two-against-twenty was no big deal to God. Jonathan had not even considered his own life, but instead considered what the LORD wanted him to do, and he did it in full faith that, if in fact he was following God, then the numbers simply did not matter! God missions are so cool!

What God is involved, two men can defeat twenty and put entire armies to flight.

But what if Jonathan was not hearing God and they got killed? "What if..." indeed!

I guess the story here is that Jonathan had faith in God regardless if it cost him his life. He was intent on seeing God prove Himself. The odds simply did not matter. And, it would seem from the story, that God liked the way Jonathan thought! Faith has always pleased God and it always will.

Father, I want to please You with faith.
