In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes. [Judges 21.25]
This is the last line of today's OYCB reading. Ironically, the first line of today's reading was:
Now in those days Israel had no king. [Judges 19.1a]
What lies in between the beginning and ending lines of Judges 19.1 and Judges 21.25 is a gruesome story. It is no wonder that the beginning and ending lines offer their disclaimers that Israel had no king (and subsequently did whatever they thought was right). It is as if the writer of Judges was making absolutely sure that readers understood that what is described in the content of today's story was purely the workings of man without leadership.
It is enough today to try to comprehend that leadership is important. In fact, so important is leadership that the condition of mankind without it is unspeakable.
Father, speak to my heart today about leadership and what it means to me personally and to me as a citizen of the USA.
