Then Moses summoned the leaders of the tribes of Israel and told them, “This is what the LORD has commanded: A man who makes a vow to the LORD or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do. [Numbers 30.1-2]
Why is a man's vow to the Lord so important?
Because the Lord's vow to mankind is so important! If God has promised something, it will be as He has promised. His Word is sure. He is unchangeable.
How can men understand God if they have nothing by which to relate to Him? Keeping a vow is a serious and sometimes difficult goal. It requires commitment and dedication.
Vows are serious business. They require forethought and this is where they really become dangerous to men! Only God can know every detail of the future. Man, obviously, cannot. Therefore, for a man to make a vow, while it makes him like God, does not make him God, and subjects him to his limitations, as a man. to be able to fulfill the vow. In other words, the greatest price a man can pay is his life.
Perhaps that is why it is such a noble thing, as Jesus said, for a man to lay down his life for his friend!
I don't know that this thought has ever come to my mind, but it is beginning to make perfect sense why God would make such a big deal over our making a vow. It is a big deal to Him because it is a big deal period!
First, we as men should not make a vow we cannot keep. But further, we must understand that our life is the greatest price we can pay to keep a vow. Many have paid this price, but many more have not. It is safe to say that every living person has not paid this price!
Father, I am grateful that You keep Your vows! I am grateful that You paid the ultimate price to keep Your vow to redeem mankind!
