The priest will then take some of the blood of the guilt offering and apply it to the lobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person being purified. [Leviticus 14.14]
I think there is something of significance in this verse regarding the ceremonial cleansing of a person healed of a skin disease. I may be oversimplifying it, but this is what seems to stand out to me:
Maybe there are three categories of purification having to do with what we hear, what we do, and where we go. Or, maybe it is about what we have heard, what we have done, and where we have been?
Or... maybe the ear thing has to do with the mind, the head, including eyes and ears and understanding. If that were the case, then perhaps the thumb thing has to do with the "mechanics" of our body...? The toe thing could have to do then with where we go in that it is either in obedience of disobedience (the Bible speaks of feet that are swift in running to evil - Paul tells Timothy to "flee" from evil).
Perhaps the most significant thing to consider however is that this ceremonial procedure is associated with healing. What does sacrificial blood have to do with disease? The blood smeared on the ear, thumb and toe has to do with spiritual cleansing... why would that even be necessary if the disease was not a spiritual thing???
I know we really don't want to see disease as a spiritual thing, but it is.
How might our lives be different if we considered every affliction a spiritual thing and, instead of seeking the help of medicine we sought the help of God? The most popular answer to this question is that most of us would be dead. We laugh, but is the spiritual truth of this not compelling enough to make us think?
Father, forgive me for being so worldly when it comes to afflictions in and on my body. Forgive me for failing to see the spiritual implications of physical conditions. Forgive me for living like a human being having a spiritual experience instead of living like a spiritual being having a human experience. Forgive me for being blind and deaf and close-minded to You and Your Word.
