Repent And Believe

Then Job replied to the LORD: “I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you. You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’ It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me. You said, ‘Listen and I will speak! I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.’ I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.” [Job 42.1-6]

Here is Job's confession. Job acknowledged that he had no business arrogantly questioning God. He had no business questioning God's motives and methods. He had no business arguing his own righteousness. He had no business thinking God owed him anything.

Adversities in our lives are nothing more than opportunities for us to repent and believe.

If Job's story tells us anything, it is that adversity is our invitation to first reflect, recognize our sin (reject pride!), repent, and rely on God (have faith - which is the only thing that pleases God).

The idea that we would consider adversity anything other than God's call to repentance is preposterous.

Father, my adversity sends a clear message: there is  pride in me for which I need to repent. Please forgive me for my default attitude of superiority over others and even over You and Your Word. How ridiculous have I been?
