Perhaps even yet they will turn from their evil ways and ask the LORD’s forgiveness before it is too late. For the LORD has threatened them with his terrible anger.” [Jeremiah 36.7]
Aside from all the prophecies in the Bible about Israel and all the other nations of the world, Everyone has Deuteronomy 28 as perhaps one of the greatest prophecies of all. It is very simple in its definition of obedience and disobedience and the respective consequences for each.
Actually it does not require "new" prophecy every time a nation or a person turns away from or obeys God. Deuteronomy 28 stands timeless in its address of individual and corporate obedience to God.
The curses found in Deuteronomy are generalizations of every prophecy of evil to come ever written. Likewise the blessings found there are generalizations of every prophecy of good to come. The only thing missing from Deuteronomy is the time and nation-relevant information that is found throughout the Old Testament from the prophets of the day.
The consequences for disobedience have always been the same: For the LORD has threatened them with his terrible anger.
The blessings for obedience have always been the same.
The message has always been the same: repent.
What about Jesus? Well it takes very little research to see that Jesus started His ministry very clearly: "Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Faith is obedience. Faith is Jesus' redeeming work is obedience.
But for all time, there are nothing but curses in store for those disobedient to God.
The bright side?
Perhaps even yet they will turn from their evil ways and ask the LORD’s forgiveness before it is too late.
But, instead of having to offer accompanying rituals and sacrifices along with our repentance, we are compelled to trust in Jesus as our once-for-all sacrificial Lamb.
Father, let Your Word sink deep into my being this day. May You find me repentant because I desire Your blessings.
